To Create Lightning Protection
The Rolling Sphere
method (which is what the lightning protection is based on) uses an imaginary
sphere of radius over the surface of a substation. The sphere is supported by
lightning masts and shield wires which provide lightning shielding. A piece of
equipment which lies below the curved surface of the sphere should be protected
from a direct stroke of lightning.
- Use the Insert Substation Object command to insert lightning masts around your substation layout.
- Select the Insert Cable/Bus command to insert shielded cables over the substation to provide additional lightning protection.
- Select the Lightning Protection Tool in the 3D Design Ribbon. The Rolling Sphere analysis method is selected by default which is what we will use for this example.
- Select the Radius of the sphere that you want to use from the drop down list. There are four default options:
- Enter the Ground Height into the field. This determines the height of the foundation.
- Select the Pick Mast button and select each mast that you placed in Step 1. This will add the coordinates of the masts to the Masts tops data grid.

Optional:
If you wish to add additional masts to the calculation
without actually inserting a mast symbol into the drawing file you can use the
Add Mast
button. To enter the specific
coordinates for the tip of the mast and the software will consider it as
another mast when it processes the lightning protection.

Optional: You can use the
Remove Mast
button to remove a mast from the
Masts tops data grid and the software will not consider it in the analysis.
- Select the Pick Cable button and select each cable that you placed in Step 2. This will add the coordinates of the masts to the Overhead cables data grid.
- Optional: You can use the Remove Cable button to remove the selected cable in the overhead cables data grid and the software will not consider it in the analysis.
- Select the Process button to complete the process.
